Retired U.S. Army Sergeant Eric Donoho had decided that today would be his last.

At 37, he'd survived war and multiple explosions, buried a child, lost friends, watched his marriage buckle under the weight of everything he'd carried home, and reached a point where he could no longer see a way forward. Sitting at his kitchen table, Eric had come to believe the people he loved would be better off without him.

Canyon of Hope is the journey of refusing to believe that lie and choosing life.

If you've ever carried something you didn't know how to put down, there's a piece of this story for you. Maybe it's grief or trauma. Maybe it's anger, guilt, failure, a marriage that's struggling, a loss you still don't understand, or the feeling that somewhere along the way you've lost a part of who you used to be.

Through an honest account of loss, marriage, fatherhood, anger, forgiveness, faith, and his own battle to stay alive, Eric shares what he learned when simply surviving wasn't enough anymore. He began to understand how the things we don't deal with eventually find their way into our relationships, our families, and the way we see ourselves. More importantly, he began to learn that healing doesn't require forgetting what happened or pretending it didn't hurt. It means learning how to carry those things without allowing them to control what comes next.

And while war is part of Eric's story, Canyon of Hope isn't a book just for veterans. Most of this story happens after the war, in the places where so many of us fight battles nobody else can see. You don't have to have worn a uniform to understand loss, anger, guilt, fear, struggling in your marriage, questioning your purpose, or wondering how the hell you're supposed to move forward when life looks nothing like you thought it would.

Faith is woven throughout this story because it became impossible for Eric to understand his journey without it. Not because believing in God kept terrible things from happening. It didn't. There were prayers that weren't answered the way he wanted, losses that didn't make sense, and moments when God felt impossibly far away. It was only later, looking back, that Eric began to see that some of the moments he thought God had abandoned him were the very places God had been carrying him through.

Canyon of Hope doesn't offer a perfect answer for pain. There isn't one. It's the story of learning to forgive yourself, accepting the things you can't change, rebuilding the relationships that matter, finding purpose in what you've survived, and understanding that asking for help isn't weakness.

You don't need to have fought in a war to find yourself somewhere in these pages. You just need to know what it feels like to carry something heavy and wonder whether the life in front of you can still be better than the life behind you.

It can. Your story isn't over.
